Meeting – 12th October 2022. The Congleton Coin Hoard

Gill Rossini, our planned speaker for Wednesday October 12th can now no longer join us for unavoidable reasons – so – we have a change of speaker for the night.

We shall be delighted to welcome Ian Doughty, Chair of Congleton Museum, who will speak to us about the “Congleton Coin Hoard” .

FOUR pottery vessels, each containing silver coins, were found in April and May 1992 on the outskirts of Congleton, The hoards were found by metal detector users in a steep natural bank forming the western side of the valley of the Howty Brook and were promptly reported to the Cheshire Coroner’s office The four hoards represent one of the largest finds from the seventeenth century ever recorded in this country. What really marks the Congleton Hoards out, however, is the amount of historical information that has been discovered relating to their possible owner.

Ian’s presentation comes highly recommended by friends from Poynton Local History Society and we are very grateful to him for agreeing to speak to us at  such short notice.
